A Stronger Beginning for Every Learner
Every school year offers a new opportunity for growth, learning, and success. However, before learners can focus on academics, they must first feel welcomed, supported, and prepared for the journey ahead.
For this reason, the Department of Education (DepEd) implements Opening Block Activities for learners from Grades 1 to 10 during the opening of School Year 2026–2027.
The Opening Block is more than a first-week orientation. It helps learners adjust to their new environment, build positive relationships, and develop habits that support learning. Moreover, it allows teachers to establish classroom expectations while creating a safe and engaging atmosphere.
Why the Opening Block Matters
The first days of school often influence a learner’s confidence and motivation. Therefore, schools dedicate time to activities that help learners feel comfortable and connected.
Instead of immediately focusing on academic lessons, teachers guide learners through interactive experiences. These activities encourage participation, communication, teamwork, and self-reflection. As a result, learners develop a stronger sense of belonging and readiness for learning.
Furthermore, the Opening Block supports learners at different developmental stages. Each key stage receives activities that match the learners’ needs, interests, and level of maturity.
Key Stage 1: Learning Through Exploration and Connection
For learners in Grades 1 to 3, the Opening Block focuses on adjustment and relationship-building.
Children participate in songs, games, storytelling activities, classroom tours, and guided discussions. They learn classroom routines, practice positive behavior, and express their feelings in healthy ways.
In addition, learners begin developing early literacy and numeracy skills through fun and engaging activities. These experiences help them gain confidence while building positive attitudes toward school.
Most importantly, young learners discover that school is a safe place where they can learn, play, and grow.
Key Stage 2: Developing Responsibility and Leadership
As learners enter Grades 4 to 6, they begin taking greater responsibility for their learning.
During the Opening Block, they explore school policies, classroom expectations, and academic goals. They also participate in leadership activities, collaborative tasks, and values formation exercises.
Moreover, learners create personal goals and action plans for the school year. These activities encourage accountability and help learners develop important organizational skills.
Grade 6 learners receive additional opportunities to strengthen leadership skills as they prepare for Junior High School.
Key Stage 3: Preparing for Future Success
For learners in Grades 7 to 10, the Opening Block emphasizes independence, leadership, and future readiness.
Learners discuss study habits, time management, digital citizenship, and responsible decision-making. They also participate in activities that promote self-awareness, resilience, and goal-setting.
Meanwhile, Grade 9 learners begin exploring career interests and possible future pathways. Grade 10 learners take this process further by learning about Senior High School tracks and career opportunities.
As a result, learners develop a clearer understanding of how their present choices can influence their future success.
Building Positive Classroom Communities
Strong learning communities do not happen by accident. Instead, teachers and learners build them together.
Throughout the Opening Block, learners engage in activities that promote respect, cooperation, empathy, and teamwork. They participate in group discussions, classroom agreements, and community-building exercises.
Furthermore, these activities help establish a positive classroom culture that supports learning throughout the year.
Supporting Teachers Through BOSY Assessments
The Opening Block also includes the administration of the Beginning of School Year (BOSY) Assessments.
These assessments provide teachers with valuable information about learners’ current abilities and learning needs. Consequently, teachers can plan lessons, interventions, and support programs more effectively.
The information gathered helps ensure that instruction remains responsive and learner-centered.
Looking Ahead
The DepEd Opening Block Activities for School Year 2026–2027 provide learners with a meaningful start to the academic year.
From Grades 1 to 10, learners build confidence, strengthen relationships, develop positive habits, and prepare for future success. More importantly, they begin the school year with a clear sense of purpose and belonging.
Ultimately, the Opening Block reminds us that education is not only about mastering lessons. It is also about helping learners become responsible, resilient, and future-ready individuals.
