Key Stage 1 Opening Block DLLs Now Available
Teachers handling Grades 1 to 3 can now access ready-to-use Opening Block Daily Lesson Logs (DLLs) for School Year 2026–2027. These lesson plans are designed to support the implementation of the Opening Block activities scheduled from June 8–11, 2026.
Under the Three-Term School Calendar, the Opening Block serves as a transition period before regular instruction begins. During this time, teachers focus on classroom routines, learner well-being, social interaction, and school readiness. As a result, learners can adjust more comfortably to their new learning environment.
Furthermore, the lesson plans provide structured and age-appropriate activities that help establish positive classroom culture from the very first week of school.
Understanding the Purpose of the Opening Block
The Opening Block is an important component of the revised school calendar. Instead of immediately introducing academic lessons, schools are encouraged to prioritize learner orientation and classroom community building.
Through carefully planned activities, learners are given opportunities to:
- Become familiar with classroom routines and procedures
- Build positive relationships with classmates and teachers
- Develop social and emotional skills
- Learn classroom responsibilities
- Practice appropriate behavior and cooperation
- Prepare for regular academic instruction
Consequently, learners develop confidence, independence, and a stronger sense of belonging before formal lessons begin.
What Is Included in the Key Stage 1 Opening Block DLLs?
The Key Stage 1 Opening Block DLLs contain five days of organized activities that gradually prepare learners for classroom learning. Each lesson focuses on developing routines, behavior expectations, emotional awareness, and readiness skills.
Grade 1 Opening Block DLL
The Grade 1 lesson plans help learners become comfortable in their new school environment. Activities include classroom tours, getting-to-know-you exercises, routine practice, and creative reflection tasks. Learners also participate in emotion-identification activities, responsibility-building exercises, and simple literacy and numeracy readiness tasks.
Moreover, Grade 1 learners are encouraged to express their feelings, build friendships, and develop confidence during their first days in school.
Grade 2 Opening Block DLL
The Grade 2 DLL strengthens previously learned classroom habits while introducing new responsibilities. Learners participate in activities that reinforce classroom rules, positive behavior, friendship skills, and emotional awareness. They also engage in literacy and numeracy review exercises that help assess readiness for the new grade level.
In addition, goal-setting activities encourage learners to take ownership of their learning and behavior throughout the school year.
Grade 3 Opening Block DLL
The Grade 3 DLL focuses on building communication skills, responsibility, and academic readiness. Learners participate in reflective discussions, collaborative activities, and classroom expectation-setting exercises. Likewise, the lesson plans include reading and mathematics mini-lessons that prepare learners for more structured instruction.
By the end of the Opening Block, Grade 3 learners are expected to demonstrate greater independence and readiness for formal classroom learning.
Why Teachers Should Use These Opening Block DLLs
These ready-made lesson plans offer several benefits for teachers and schools.
First, they reduce preparation time during the busy opening week of classes. Second, they provide activities that align with the objectives of the Opening Block. Third, they help teachers establish consistent classroom routines and expectations.
Additionally, the DLLs support learner-centered instruction by promoting participation, collaboration, and positive social interaction. Because the activities are developmentally appropriate, they can easily be implemented in different classroom settings.
Most importantly, the lesson plans allow teachers to focus on building meaningful relationships with learners while ensuring a smooth start to the school year.
Building a Strong Foundation for Learning
The first week of school plays a significant role in shaping learner attitudes and classroom culture. When learners feel safe, welcomed, and valued, they are more likely to participate actively in learning activities.
Therefore, Opening Block activities are not simply introductory exercises. Instead, they serve as the foundation for successful learning experiences throughout the school year.
Likewise, establishing routines early helps learners become more independent and responsible. Strong classroom relationships also contribute to a positive and productive learning environment.
